Watch out for these signs of gum disease

Posted on 3/20/2023 by Southern Family Dental Care
Watch out for these signs of gum diseaseGum disease is a serious bacterial infection that affects the gum tissues. If left untreated it can lead to periodontal disease which can pose more severe and complex health problems. The most common cause of gum disease is poor dental hygiene practices, which lead to the accumulation of dental plaque in your mouth. The dental plaque gets mixed with bad bacteria in your mouth which can eat into your gums and the root of your teeth leading to infection which manifests itself as gum disease. The following are the most common signs of gum disease:

Bleeding Gums

Many patients who have gum disease experience bleeding gums when they brush or floss. When you notice bleeding gums and that you do not have any serious dental injuries, this can be a strong indicator that you have gum disease. The bacteria in your mouth harm your gum tissues resulting in ruptured blood vessels and an inability to heal effectively. These leave inflammations on your gums, and with any slight irritation, your gums bleed easily.

Bad Breath

If you have persistent bad breath, it can be a strong indicator of gum disease. This is usually because of the injuries or infections in your mouth producing a liquid that usually has a foul smell.

Shifting or Loose Teeth

When you have gum disease your teeth can become loose and shift from their position. This is because your gums may have receded and can no longer hold your teeth firmly in their pockets.

Call our offices if you see any of these signs. Gum disease is a serious condition, and you require immediate dental intervention.
