Can TMJ Disorders Cause Vertigo?

Posted on 4/10/2023 by Southern Family Dental Care
Can TMJ Disorders Cause Vertigo? The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is an intricate structure that plays a pivotal role in speech, eating, and swallowing. Many different painful conditions may stem from dysfunctional or diseased TMJ joints. Disease, injury, and excessive teeth grinding are just some of the causes of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues, which may cause symptoms such as disc degeneration, inflammation, discomfort, a crooked bite, and even dizziness.

Patients with vertigo, a kind of dizziness characterized by a spinning sensation or a sense that the environment is moving, often experience migraines, buzzing in the ears, uneasiness, vomiting, and an inability to concentrate. TMJ issues are only one of several potential causes of vertigo. TMJ-related vertigo occurs when inflammation of the jaw joints presses on the inner ear, the part of the ear that relays the body's position and movement to the brain. Inflammation of the joints may cause pressure on the inner ear, sending erroneous signals to the brain about the body's function and activity and disrupting the balance.

TMJ Is Treatable

Minor cases of TMJ may often be treated well using conservative methods, such as the application of heat or cold to the affected area, the use of splints or night mouth guards, or the use of anti-inflammatory medications. It is sometimes necessary to operate on TMJ patients in order to tighten the connective tissue and tendons or realign a joint that has become out of position due to severe soft tissue injury.
