Dental implants or dentures

Posted on 9/11/2023 by Southern Family Dental Care
Dental implants or dentures Both implants and dentures act as tooth replacement options. Choosing between the two is a function of many factors. Among the factors to consider are; the number of remaining teeth, price range, the strength of the jawbone, and your preference.

Understanding implants

Dental implants are permanent. The doctor first extracts the damaged root/s to create a hole. A metal screw-like prosthetic root is inserted into the hole to support the artificial crown. Implants require a sufficient amount of bone mass and density to work effectively. Before securing the crown, it is crucial to allow the tissues to grow around the prosthetic root for maximum support.

Pros and cons of implants

Implants support the health of the jawbone in two ways. Firstly, they are fused to the jawbone to last a lifetime without needing replacement. Secondly, they replace the damaged root after which muscle tissue can grow around the new prosthetic root. Not only do they provide stability, but also, they make it easy to eat, chew and speak efficiently. The downside of implants is that they take longer for the whole process to be complete. They can take up to one year to be precise. Implants are more expensive than dentures and can only be done surgically.

Understanding dentures

Most dentures are removable. For dentures, the amount of bone mass present does not matter. Dentures are false teeth fitted into your mouth either completely or partially. Partial dentures replace either the teeth on the upper or lower jaw. Dentures require the doctor to first conduct an in-depth study of your bite functioning. They also need to establish how your upper and lower jaws are aligned to make the best custom-fit dentures. Depending on the type of denture, they could either fit onto your gums through natural suctioning or through an adhesive gel.

The benefit and drawbacks of dentures

Prosthetically, dentures are pleasant in appearance. Cost-wise, dentures are less expensive as compared to implants. Dentures do not require any surgery. With the right imaging, dental experts can take precise and accurate measurements and they are good to go. Over time, the dentures may wear down and need replacement. Our doctors will access the severity of your condition and advice on the best option for you. Take the step and schedule a consultation any day of the week.
