What Is DIY Dentistry?

Many people love to work on their homes, yards, and cars by doing their own handiwork. There is no question that DIY is a great idea for hobbyists and people who love to save money and make their lives more beautiful. However, DIY dentistry is never a good idea. Here is an explanation of the problems with DIY dentistry.

The Rise of DIY Dentistry

With the rise of short videos on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and especially TikTok, people have been exposed to all sorts of interesting home makeover ideas. Millions of videos have also been made about how easy it is to take care of your teeth and gums all by yourself.

Some of the DIY techniques you have seen in videos are generally harmless. For example, many influencers tout the benefits of oil pulling, which is the Hindu practice from India of swishing a teaspoon full of natural oil, such as coconut oil, in your mouth for 20 minutes to help rid your mouth of bacteria. Oil pulling is not as effective as regular brushing and flossing for preventing problems with your mouth, but it is not generally harmful either.

However, some elements of DIY dentistry can be extremely harmful to your teeth and gums. For example, if you suspect a tooth has a cavity and you are in a great deal of pain, you may think that pulling out your own tooth will relieve the pain and save you money. However, if you pull your own tooth, you run the risk of bone loss and infection, and you will have the knowledge that if you went to our dentist in the first place, you might not have needed to pull the tooth at all.
