Standard dental exams are the primary way our dentist checks the health of your mouth - not just your teeth and gums - but all of the structures of your mouth. While dental exams do not take much time, they are the best way you have to keep your teeth and gums as healthy as possible.
Step 1: The Cleaning
Before our dentist can come in and check your teeth and gums, your teeth need to be as clean as possible. A dental hygienist will come in and begin to clean your teeth. First, the hygienist will use dental tools to check for plaque and tartar. Plaque is the film you feel on your teeth after you eat. You can brush plaque away with a toothbrush and by flossing. Tartar, however, has to be removed by your hygienist using tools. If it has been a while since you have been to the dentist, you may have more tartar buildup than usual.
Once all of the plaque and tartar are gone, the hygienist will polish your teeth. At some dental offices, hygienists use a round rotating brush and flavored toothpaste. Other offices use a tool that looks a bit like an airbrush.
Step 2: The X-rays
Some dental offices take X-rays prior to the cleaning, while others wait until your teeth are fabulously clean. Either way, our dentist will want to get new X-rays each year. The X-rays help dentists identify any problems you may be having, such as bone loss or wisdom teeth that have not come in.
Step 3: The Exam
Now that your teeth are gorgeous, our dentist will thoroughly inspect them. They look for abnormalities, cavities, or evidence of gum disease. Dentists also examine the tongue, hard and soft palate, and inside your cheeks. Our dentists also look for signals of chronic illness in your mouth. For example, both diabetics and people with heart disease may have signs of dry mouth, which can lead to gum disease. Once our dentist is satisfied your mouth is in great shape, you will be finished with the exam.
