How Is Cosmetic Dentistry Different From Restorative Dentistry?

Posted on 7/1/2024 by Southern Family Dental Care
happy patient with a fabulous new smileIf you are trying to make moves to improve your smile, it is understandable since that is often the first thing people notice about others when they first meet. While some people seem to be born with a perfect smile, others have to take steps to improve their smile. When it comes to smile work, does it matter if you choose a cosmetic dentist or a restorative dentist?

Some Information On Dental Specialties

Like doctors, all dentists begin their dental practice in dental school, taking the same courses and labwork as every other dentist. However, once dental school is finished, dentists can choose to begin their practice in general dentistry, or they can choose to continue their training in a residency program. Usually, in residency, dentists receive additional training in their chosen field, such as pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, or prosthodontics. Dentists can also specialize in either cosmetic or restorative dentistry. Often, dentists will choose to learn both cosmetic and restorative practices at the same time.

How Are Cosmetic Dentistry and Restorative Dentistry Different?

Dentists who specialize in cosmetic dentistry focus on improving the look of your smile. They may use different techniques, such as whitening, veneers, and bonding, to improve your smile's aesthetic appearance. With cosmetic dentistry, as with other cosmetic practices, the focus is on the look of your smile and teeth.

Restorative dentistry may use many of the same techniques as cosmetic dentistry, but the overall focus is different. Restorative dentists focus on improving the function of your teeth and maintaining their structure. For example, if you have suffered trauma to your mouth, a restorative dentist may use dental implants to restore your smile along with your ability to eat and speak.

Which One Do I Need?

If you are not happy with your smile and you think you need some help achieving the look you want, it is time to consider which dentist may be right for you. If you are not sure whether to choose a cosmetic dentist or a restorative dentist, you may not have to choose at all. Our dentist has training in many dental areas, so your first stop should be at our office to make an appointment for a consultation.
