Here are some tips for mouth emergencies so you can begin care before you come in to visit our dentist.

How Often Do Mouth Emergencies Happen?

According to the American Dental Association, many accidents and injuries happen in the head or neck area. In fact, one in every five adults has had at least one facial or head injury in their lifetimes. Here are some of the most common tooth emergencies.

Avulsed Tooth

One of the most common mouth injuries that can occur in both children and adults is when a tooth is avulsed (knocked out). If you think a tooth has been knocked out, you need to first apply ice or gauze to try and control the bleeding. Next, look for the tooth. It may still be in the mouth, or it might be on the ground close by. If an adult loses a tooth, you can try to place the tooth back into the tooth socket. If the tooth cannot be placed, put the tooth in cold milk or saline and bring it with you to our dentist. If it is a child who has been hurt, bring the tooth with you to our dentist as well.

Bleeding in the Mouth

If someone is bleeding in their mouth due to an injury, do as much as you can to stop the bleeding with ice in a paper towel or gauze on your way to the dentist. Remember that mouth injuries can bleed heavily, which can be frightening.

Sudden, Intense Pain

Sudden, intense pain in a tooth or around the gums can be a signal of not only mouth trauma but also infection. If you have pain with a fever and a large bump or bulge in your mouth, you may have a tooth that is severely infected or abscessed. You can apply ice to the area of the pain while you are driving over to our dentist.
