To maintain good oral health, you'll need to ensure that your teeth are clean, your tongue stays healthy, and that you're generally aware of the state of your mouth. Your dentist will also help you stay on top of your oral health by giving you routine checkups, which can help with detection of any issues early on before they get worse and more expensive to fix. The following are some basics of oral health to keep in mind as you go about living and eating normally.
Brushing teeth.
Brushing your teeth is one of the most basic yet effective ways to maintain good oral health. If you want to keep your teeth strong and free from cavities, make sure you're brushing twice a day for two minutes each time. Look for toothpaste that contains fluoride.
Smoking habits.
Not only can smoking impact your oral health, but it is also known to contribute to a myriad of serious health problems in and outside of your mouth. Quitting smoking may not be easy, but it's worth it—especially since smokers are almost twice as likely to develop gum disease compared to non-smokers. If you want to improve your oral health, now's a good time to quit!
Limit sugary drinks.
One of the best ways to keep your teeth healthy is to limit sugary drinks. Sugary drinks are often loaded with sugar, which can do a number on your teeth. If you drink soda or other sugary beverages regularly, consider switching to plain water. While there isn't much nutritional value in water, it's better for your oral health than most sodas and other sugary beverages.
Regular checkups.
It's important to set up a regular schedule for checkups at your dentist, who can give you advice on how to avoid cavities and other oral health problems. If you have children, make sure they get checkups regularly as well. Visit our dental office page for more information about what to expect from your visit and read some of our client reviews.
