Dental implants date back to 1952, created in Sweden, and they are now one of the most common restorative dental procedures available. They are discrete, secure, and have several uses.

There are also a couple of different types of dental implants available, depending on your specific needs. Our dentist at Southern Family Dental Care can give you more information on available dental implants.

Dental Implant Uses

There are three main uses for dental implants.

•  Dental implants can be used as a foundation for complete or partial dentures. The replacement teeth attach on top of the implant to restore the look and functionality of the mouth.
•  Dental implants are also used to secure fixed dental bridges. These are also replacement teeth, but they are used when only a small section of teeth is missing. Dental implants can also have replacement teeth, themselves. So, they may be stand-alone structures to restore the look and function of your teeth.
•  Dental implants may also be used temporarily to anchor natural teeth into a more desired position. They are removed once the natural teeth are settled into this position.

Types of Dental Implants

There are two different types of dental implants that you can get. Endosteal implants are those which are implanted into the jawbone. Subperiosteal implants, on the other hand, rest in the gum tissue, but over the jawbone. These are rarely used today. However, the jaw is not always strong enough to support endosteal implants, which is when subperiosteal implants would come into play.

If your jawbone is not strong enough to support endosteal implants, there are a few options to get your jawbone to the point where it is strong enough to provide support. For instance, we can provide a bone graft, sinus augmentation, or sinus lift to provide a sturdier base.

Dental Implant Procedure

Our dentist will first consult with you about the implant surgery and collect some diagnostic images, such as x-rays, CT scans, and panoramic films. If the bone needs to be strengthened or grown, our dentist will discuss these options with you. Once the jawbone is strong enough, you will be scheduled for your implant surgery.

On the day of the initial surgery, our dentist will first administer anesthesia. The tooth is extracted to make a place for the implant. We typically need to place a bone graft (cadaver or synthetic bone) in order to have a sturdy base for the implant. This area will need to heal for about two to six months before the implant can be placed.

Once that area has healed, our dentist will provide more anesthetic. Then, they will place the titanium implant using a drill and other dental tools. Our dentist will also place a healing cap and stitch the gum at this point. This needs to heal for another two to six months.

The implant will integrate with your jawbone and our dentist can get a dental mold once it has healed. After the mold is received, our lab will produce your restoration, such as a crown or denture.

Dental Implant FAQ's

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants offer numerous benefits, including improved appearance, speech, comfort, and oral health. They function like natural teeth, providing stability and durability. Additionally, implants help preserve jawbone density and prevent the shifting of adjacent teeth.

How long do dental implants last?

With proper care and maintenance, dental implants can last many years, often a lifetime. Regular dental check-ups, good oral hygiene, and avoiding habits that can damage your teeth, such as smoking or chewing on hard objects, are crucial to prolonging the life of your implants.

Are dental implants safe?

Yes, dental implants are considered safe and effective when performed by a qualified dental professional. The procedure has a high success rate, and advancements in dental technology have made it a reliable option for tooth replacement. Your dentist will evaluate your specific case to ensure the safety and success of the implant.

What should I expect during the recovery period after dental implant surgery?

After dental implant surgery, you may experience some swelling, bruising, and minor discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed pain medication. It's important to follow your dentist's post-operative care instructions, maintain good oral hygiene, and attend follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing. Full recovery can take several months as the implant integrates with the jawbone.

Who is a good candidate for dental implants?

Good candidates for dental implants are individuals with healthy gums and adequate jawbone density to support the implant. Candidates should also be committed to maintaining good oral hygiene and regular dental visits. Certain medical conditions, smoking, or insufficient bone structure may affect candidacy. A thorough evaluation by your dentist will determine if implants are suitable for you.

How do I care for my dental implants?

Caring for dental implants involves maintaining good oral hygiene practices, such as brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and using an antibacterial mouthwash. Regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings are also essential. Avoiding habits that can damage your teeth, like chewing on ice or hard objects, will help keep your implants in good condition.

Will my dental implants look natural?

Yes, dental implants are designed to look and function like natural teeth. The crowns placed on top of the implants are custom-made to match the color, shape, and size of your existing teeth, ensuring a natural and aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Can dental implants fail?

While dental implants have a high success rate, they can fail in some cases. Factors contributing to implant failure include poor oral hygiene, smoking, certain medical conditions, and insufficient bone density. Regular dental visits and proper care can significantly reduce the risk of implant failure.

Are dental implants painful?

Most patients report that dental implant surgery is less painful than expected. Local anesthesia and sedation options are used during the procedure to minimize discomfort. After the surgery, any pain or discomfort can be managed with prescribed pain medications and typically subsides within a few days.

How do dental implants compare to dentures and bridges?

Dental implants offer several advantages over dentures and bridges, including improved stability, comfort, and longevity. Unlike dentures, implants are fixed in place and do not require adhesives. They also help preserve jawbone density and do not rely on adjacent teeth for support, as bridges do. However, the best option depends on individual needs and should be discussed with your dentist.
