Family Dentistry
By offering preventive dentistry services like cleanings and exams, we can prevent your child from ever developing cavities, gum disease, orthodontic issues, and many other dental problems.
Exams
We do not typically use that many tools during an exam. Usually, only a small flashlight and mirror are needed, though we may use additional tools if necessary. This will help us determine the full extent of any injury or other condition.
We may also have your child get x-rays done once their permanent teeth begin coming in so we can make certain they are aligned correctly.
If it looks like there may be problems, we can begin correcting this alignment. Doing so as soon as possible helps make the entire process easier.
Cleanings
For older children and teen patients, we may apply a fluoride treatment to the teeth as we would with an adult patient.
Even children with excellent brushing and flossing habits need to have these cleanings. A standard toothbrush is not able to remove hardened plaque.
It is also very difficult for everyone to fully clean their teeth. This is because it can be difficult to get the right angles when you brush your own teeth.
When we brush and floss your child's teeth during a cleaning, we can make certain every part of every tooth is cleaned. This helps reduce cavities, gum disease, and other damage.
Restorative Dentistry
When prevention is not enough or not possible, restorative dentistry from Southern Family Dental Care will ensure that your child is smiling again in no time at all.
Fillings
We use dental fillings to restore form and function to the teeth for any number of different minor dental problems, from small cavities to mild damage.
Fillings can also be preventive, as a filling today can stop a cavity from expanding or damage from worsening.
Fillings are low-impact and can be made of a composite, ceramic, or silver material.
Tooth Extractions
Extractions are usually not done on baby teeth, but sometimes it is a better option to remove a tooth so it cannot affect its neighbors.
Extractions can be performed on teeth that are themselves perfectly healthy but may be crowding other teeth.
The most well-known example of this is the wisdom teeth, because some children can be born with too many teeth.
Space Maintenance
When we do have to extract a baby tooth, or when a baby tooth is lost prematurely due to other causes, we can perform what is called space maintenance.
We use a simple appliance known as a spacer that reserves a spot for the permanent tooth underneath.
Without the spacer, the tooth below might erupt incorrectly and crowd nearby teeth. Space maintenance is far easier (and more affordable) than orthodontics.
Cosmetic Dentistry
The term cosmetic dentistry covers a variety of dental services that focus on improving the appearance of your smile.
Some cosmetic dentistry services may also be practiced by traditional dental providers, but cosmetic dentistry focuses more on elective dental treatments - as opposed to those that are absolutely necessary for oral health.
What Procedures Are Performed in Cosmetic Dentistry?
Perhaps the most well-known treatment in cosmetic dentistry is professional teeth whitening.
This involves placing a peroxide bleaching solution on your teeth to brighten them and restore them to their natural shade.
Cosmetic dentistry also includes procedures like placing veneers or crowns on damaged teeth to restore their appearance. Veneers are thin layers of material that are placed on the front layer of your teeth, while dental crowns are caps that cover damaged teeth.
Cosmetic dentistry also includes dental bonding, bridgework, and dental implants.
Smile makeovers are another popular treatment. A smile makeover is a comprehensive treatment plan that can involve several cosmetic dentistry procedures to give you the smile you have always wanted.
Invisalign is also a popular cosmetic dentistry treatment that straightens your teeth in a similar way to braces.
Sedation Dentistry Sedation dentistry refers to a variety of approaches that are all centered on helping you feel completely comfortable during every visit to the dentist.
While it is often referred to as sleep dentistry, this is actually a misnomer. Most sedation techniques keep you conscious, using a more gentle, calming approach.
Whether you are visiting for a simple cleaning or are undergoing a more complex procedure, sedation dentistry is available to help you.
Available Sedation Options
We offer a sedation option for every age and comfort level.
The most common option is laughing gas, or as we dentists call it, nitrous oxide.
Nitrous oxide is a great choice for anyone, even children, as its effects are brief but immediate, meaning you can usually drive yourself home afterward.
Oral sedation requires you to take a prescribed pill beforehand. You will be awake just like with nitrous oxide, but unlike the gas you probably will not remember much of the procedure.
IV sedation is similar, but because there is no pill to take it works much faster and gives us the ability to fine-tune your levels.
The last option is what most people think of when they hear about sedation dentistry: general anesthesia. General anesthesia is actually rarely used as it renders you fully unconscious.
Can You Benefit from Sedation?
Anyone that wants a more relaxed, comforting experience can benefit from one of our sedation options.
Children often receive a mild and extremely safe sedative like nitrous oxide, but adults can benefit just as much.
Patients with a sensitive gag reflex or highly sensitive teeth also frequently opt for sedation to make even minor treatments easier.
